Peterites take U-20 sevens rugby title
Kannangara Vidyalaya bag Plate Trophy:
St Peter’s College, Colombo after being led 0-10 at the breather came
back storming to beat Isipatana College, Colombo by 12 points (one goal,
one try) to 10 (two tries) in the final to clinch the Cup Championship
of the schools Under 20 Rugby Sevens final played at the Royal Sports
Complex yesterday.
It was Isipatana who opened scoring when winger Uditha Prematilleke
scampered through for an unconverted try by the corner flag. On the
stroke of half time the lads from Havelock Town increased the lead when
fly half Hirantha Perera scored by the corner flag but failed to add the
extra points and Isipatana led 10-0 at half time.
Soon after resumption the Peterites scored a superb try through
Anuradha Herath who touched down under the posts to give Jerome Canute
an easy kick at goal and the scores read 10-7.
Two minutes later Anuradha Herath who had an excellent game dived
over by the corner flag to the Jubilation of his team-mates. Canute
missed the conversion and the Peterites took the lead by 12-10.
Although Isipatana tried hard in the last few minutes they could not
penetrate the Peterite defence and the lads from Bambalapitiya ran out
winners by 12-10 which gave them their second Rugby title within a
fortnight having won the Under 18 Rugby title earlier.
In the semi-finals the Peterites scored a hard fought 14-12 win over
Dharmaraja while Isipatana overcame Kingswood by 17 points to 5. C W W
Kannangara Vidyalaya, Borella came up with a stupendous performance to
clinch the Plate Championship with an easy 17 points (one goal, two
tries) to 5 (one try) win over Nalanda in the final.
Dinesh Lakmal (two) and Madawa Sathsara (one) scored the tries for C
W W Kannangara Vidyalaya. In the semi-finals the lads from Borella
scored a stunning 17-5 win over Royal College, Colombo while Nalanda had
a convincing 19-0 win over D S Senanayake in the other semi-final.
It was a great achievement for Giant Killers C W W Kannangara
Vidyalaya who on the previous day scored a sensational 24-7 win over
Trinity College, Kandy.
Science College, Mount Lavinia bagged the Bowl Championship by
overcoming Wesley College, Colombo by 14 points (two goals) to 7 (one
goal) in the final.
Ananda College, Colombo took the Shield Championship with an easy 19
points (two goals, one try) to nil win over Lalith Athulathmudali
Vidyalaya, Mount Lavinia. |
