Spill gates of many reservoirs opened following heavy rain

The Irrigation Department was forced to open spill gates of several major reservoirs with them reaching spill level following the continuous rain.

The heavy rain resulted in water levels rising in several reservoirs in Ampara, Badulla, Anuradhapura and Hambantota districts forcing authorities to open the spill gates. The spill gates of Parakrama Samudraya, Unnachchi, Sorabora, Nagadeepa and Minneriya tanks were also opened following the rise in water levels, department sources said.

The Mahaweli reservoir has also reached spill level, the sources said.

The sources said if the rain continues, the spill gates of Randenigala, Udawallawa, Kandalama, Kala wewa and Rathhinda Mahaweli reservoirs will also have to be opened.
