Sakvithi gets two years’ RI for bigamy

Chandana Weerakumara alias Sakvithi Ranasinghe, head of the defunct
Sakvithi Constructions, in remand custody for defrauding depositors over
Rs 100 million, was sentenced to a term of two years’ rigorous
imprisonment and fined Rs 25,000 by High Court Judge Vimal Nambuwansa in
a bigamy case filed by his wife yesterday.
The accused at the outset pleaded guilty. Complainant Subashini de
Silva lodged a complaint that her husband Sakvithi Ranasinghe had
married Anuradika Kumari without annulling his marriage to the
complainant. Sakvithi had come to know Kumari, also in custody, as a
pupil in one of his islandwide English classes. State Counsel Janaki
Wekadapola prosecuted. |
