Drinking water project for Anuradhapura

Safe drinking water for the people living in Anuradhapura North area, with loan facilities amounting to Rs.7,458 million from Japanese government on the proposal made by the President to construct a water supply scheme to provide safe drinking water for the people of Anuradhapura North area, with loan facilities amounting to Japanese Yen 5,166 million (approximately Rs.7,458 million) to be provided by the Japanese government, was approved by the Cabinet.

It is intended to cover Medawachchiya and Rambewa Divisional Secretariat divisions in the Anuradhapura District in the first instance, and to implement the design stage of the Wahalkada Water Supply Scheme.

In the Anuradhapura District, 85 per cent of the population living in rural areas are depending on unsafe ground water which contains high fluoride for their drinking and other requirements due to of lack of enough water supply facility. It is intend to enter into a loan agreement with the JICA for this.


Amendment to the Tertiary and Vocational Education Act

Amendment to the Tertiary and Vocational Education Act on the proposal made by Youth Affairs and Skills Development Minister Dullas Alahapperuma to make amendments to the Tertiary and Vocational Education Act was approved by the Cabinet.

Many changes have taken place in the field of Tertiary and Vocational Education during the last two decades.

TVEC as the regulatory body in the Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector, these changes and developments have to be incorporated to the existing Tertiary and Vocational Education Act. Accordingly, the Cabinet approval is sought to submit the draft Bill of Tertiary and Vocational Education Act No: 20 of 1990 to the Legal Draftsman.


Housing project for the legal officers

A housing project proposed to be constructed for the legal officers of the Attorney General's Department on a proposal made by Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities Minister Wimal Weerawansa for the National Housing Development Authority to construct a storied building consisting of 55 housing units was approved by the Cabinet.

Arrangements have been made for financial allocations for this housing project to be made totally by the recommended legal officers of the Association.

It has been decided to offer a concession of 50 per cent of the current value of the land in which the houses are proposed to be constructed for the members of the Legal Officers Association of the Attorney General's Department. The total cost is Rs. 1125 million.


Construction of 9.32 km OCH awarded to Chinese Company

The proposal made by the President, in his capacity as the Ports and Highways Minister, to award the contract to Metallurgical Corporation of China Ltd, of the peoples Republic of China at a contract price of Rs. 66.69 Billion as recommended by the Standing Cabinet Appointed Procurement Committee, was approved by the Cabinet.

The total length of the project is 29.22 Km and is planned to be constructed in there phases on turnkey basis with funding from China's EXIM Bank.
