Craft Council launches handicraft exchange programme

The National Craft Council with the assistance of Dastkari Haat
Samiti of New Delhi launched a handicraft exchange and product
development programme to promote tourism. Artisans are trained in making
handicraft based souvenirs made out of waste and cut pieces and freely
available raw material.
The objectives of the National Craft Council are to enhance the
economic and social status of craftsmen by introducing new designs to
local and international markets.
This proposed programme is conducted under the direction of Indian
designers and graduates in Sri Lankan design. The Traditional Industries
and Small Enterprise Development Ministry will guide the National Craft
Council to launch the progarmme.
National Craft Council chairman Buddhi Keerthisena said tourists are
likely to buy small items at cheaper prices.
"Therefore the National Craft Council will launch a textile based
handicraft development programme," he told a press briefing yesterday. |
