Craft Council launches handicraft exchange programme

The National Craft Council with the assistance of Dastkari Haat Samiti of New Delhi launched a handicraft exchange and product development programme to promote tourism. Artisans are trained in making handicraft based souvenirs made out of waste and cut pieces and freely available raw material.

The objectives of the National Craft Council are to enhance the economic and social status of craftsmen by introducing new designs to local and international markets.

This proposed programme is conducted under the direction of Indian designers and graduates in Sri Lankan design. The Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development Ministry will guide the National Craft Council to launch the progarmme.

National Craft Council chairman Buddhi Keerthisena said tourists are likely to buy small items at cheaper prices.

"Therefore the National Craft Council will launch a textile based handicraft development programme," he told a press briefing yesterday.
