Leading citizens felicitated

Four leading citizens of Kandy were felicitated at Trinity College,
Kandy at a ceremony organized by the Hospital Committee of Kandy
recently.
The function was headed by Central Province Governor Tikiri
Kobbekaduwa.
Carl Muller, Sinnasamy Muththiah, Dr Karunaratne and Dr

The recipients of awards were Dr Samad Ismail, Dr N W Karunaratne,
Managing Director Luckyland Biscuits Sinnasamy Muththiah, and artiste
Carl Muller.
Dr Samad Ismail, an old boy of Wesley College, Colombo who excelled
in hockey and athletics, entered Medical College in 1943. He served in
the Royal Ceylon Air Force in the late 50s. Dr N W Karunaratne, who
studied up to Grade 5 at Trinity College, Kandy later joined Royal
College, Colombo. He played cricket, rugby and boxing at Royal College.
He won the 100 metres at the Public Schools Athletic Meet clocking 11.05
seconds.
He was also a member of the Royal College Rugby team at the 1st
Bradby Shield Rugby match against Trinity College.
Sinnasamy Muththiah started his Luckyland Biscuits business in 1964
in a small way and later expanded it. He is the father of Muththiah
Muralitharan, highest test wicket taker.
Artiste Carl Muller, born in Kandy, eldest out of 13 family members,
studied at Royal College, Colombo and served in the Royal Ceylon Navy
and the Army. He is a novelist and a poet.
Central Province Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa said he is happy to be
present on this occasion as these gentlemen set an example to society. |
