Over Rs 25 million as fines
Five hundred and ninety nine power pirates had been fined Rs 25.33
million through cases filed by the Chunnakam Electricity Board. The
power pirates had been nabbed by the Electricity flying squad and the
Police. They were produced in courts and fines were for illicit tapping
of electricity from January to December last year.
One hundred and seventy four were fined Rs 8,537 million during
January. Ten were fined Rs 0.77 million during February, eight were
fined 0.396 million rupees during March, 13 were fined 1.176 million
rupees in April, 8 were fined 0.713 million rupees in May, 109 were
fined 5.129 million rupees in June, 0.910 million rupees in July, 2.23
million rupees in August, 1.991 million rupees in September, 0.223
million rupees in October, in November 7 were fined 3.081 million rupees
and in December 8 were fined 0.066 million rupees.
Stolen motorcycle recovered
A motorcycle worth Rs 200,000 stolen at Thirunelvely has been
recovered by the Police at Kodikamam. The person who stole the bicycle
had left it in a house for safe keeping. The suspect is evading arrest.
Rehabilitated post office opened
Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa opened the
rehabilitated Central Post Office at Kilinochchi on January 19.
Ministers Douglas Devananda and Kilinochchi Parliamentarian M Chandra
Kumar joined Minister Rajapaksa at the opening ceremony.
This post office was completely damaged during the war and the
Economic Development Minister allocated 50 million for its
reconstruction. This will function as the General Post Office in
Kilinochchi.
Motorcyclist crushed to death
A motorcyclist had been killed on the spot when a lorry rammed
against the cycle from behind on A9 road in Kodikamam junction on
Saturday, January 19. The motorcyclist was crushed by the vehicle
against an electric post. He has been identified as Kanagasundram
Jeevaraja, 60. The driver of the vehicle has surrendered to the Police.
Youths arrested
Last week a 14-year-old girl had been sexually abused by two youths
in Kayts Police area. The two youths had been carrying on their sex acts
with the girl on previous occasions.
The youths had been taken into custody on complaints made by the
girl’s parents. The youths are from Jaffna and Chettikulam Police areas.
Twelve injured
Twelve persons, four women and eight males were injured when an SLTB
bus turned turtle. The bus was proceeding to Mannar town from the
Karisal village along the Dharmapuram main road.
