The ship that was attended to was the 225 meter long Italian owned
bulk carrier the “Giovanni Battista Bottiglieri” on voyage from India to
south Africa which made an urgent call to Colombo, sensing a drop in its
speed.
Thee Italian ship owners directly contacted Kiran Atapattu, the Chief
Operating Officer of both Colombo Engineering and Walkers Engineering
who swiftly responded to the very urgent requirement of the ship by
immediately mobilizing a team of twenty top divers with technicians in
three work boats taking with them underwater cameras and underwater
hydraulically operated American made ship cleaning and polishing
machinery systems to carry out the operation.

On an initial camera inspection made by the diving team it was
revealed that there was extensive marine growth on the complete
underwater belly of the ship including on the propeller and it’s rudder
which halted its speed.
Though this kind of repair is usually done in a dry dock for days and
weeks, the Colombo Engineering team with the introducing of modern
technology completed the assignment in just 48 hours thus saving ship
owners a huge sun of money while the ship repair work brought in
valuable foreign exchange to the county.
