Divi Neguma boosts rural economy - Minister

The Divi Neguma Act passed by Parliament is a victory for the government, while defeating several forces and overcoming a number of challenges. The Divi Neguma programme aims to uplift the rural economy, Public Administration and Home Affairs Minister W D J Seneviratne said.

The minister was addressing a special ceremony at Sri Wickremasinghe Abhayathilakaramaya, Kuruwita.

Divi Neguma is one of the most innovative and farsighted programmes launched by the Economic Development Ministry, under the direction of Minister Basil Rajapaksa, he said. Its main objective is to uplift the livelihood of both rural and urban communities. “The government introduced the Divi Neguma Act to make this programme more efficient and effective. Therefore, it is the duty of everyone to lend their support for the success of this programme,” he added.

Minister Seneviratne distributed cheques worth around Rs. 82 million among several organizations to develop the roads in Kuruwita area.

The minister also distributed cement bags and roofing sheets for 35 families to renovate their homes. The minister said traditional industrialists should make the best use of modern technology to develop their industries.
