Countrywide celebrations for Thai Pongal

Hindus in Galle in large numbers participated in Thai Pongal
celebrations yesterday.
The main Thai Pongal Poojas were performed at Meenachchi
Sundareshwaram Kovil and Kadhir Welayudha Swaami Kovil at Kaluwella ,
Galle where hundreds of Hindus from all over Galle participated.
Hundreds of Buddhist devotees also joined Hindu devotees in the Thai
Pongal rituals.
Kurkkal Thachchana Moorthi performed the Thai Pongal rituals at
Kadhir Welayudha Swami Kovil, while the festival rites at Meenachchi
Sundareshwaram Kovil were held by Kurakkal Krishnamoorthi. Concurrent to
religious performances at temples, Hindus at domestic level too rejoiced
the enthusiasm of Thai Pongal by participating in religious performances
at their households and business places.

Ampara: Hindus throughout Ampara district celebrated
Thai Pongal yesterday. Here, Hindus participate in special
poojas at Alayadivembu Sri Vammiyadipillayar Alayam where
Chief Priest Sri Palanivel Ketheeswara Sarma conducted the

St. Sebastian's festival
The annual feast of the Katuneriya St. Sebastian's
church will begin with the flag hoisting ceremony on January 17 at
5.00 p.m. This will be followed by daily Novenas from January 18 to
January 26 at 6.30 p.m. The festival concludes with the festival
high mass on January 27 at 7.30 a.m.
New strains of paddy

The Labuduwa Paddy Research Institute invented two
strains of paddy.
Sources said the new paddy varieties are named as
LD-3-12-50 red samba and LD- 3-6-12 white samba.
They have been released for cultivation. Nearly
80-100 bushels of paddy would be possible through the successful
cultivation of them in an acre in the wet zone. They are resistant
to paddy pests and insect, the sources said.
New building for Harispattuva PS
The Pura Neguma programme carried out by the Local
Government and Provincial Councils Ministry has allocated Rs
50,000,000 to construct a new building for the local authority of
Harispattuva in the Kandy district. The Harispattuva Pradeshiya
Sabha and a shopping complex will be housed in the new building.
