Highest scorers of Uyanwatta Primary



Shenal Sanchitha Tharushi Dewmini

Shenal Sanchitha and Tharushi Dewmini won first and second places in the Grade Five Scholarship Examination this year from Uyanwatta Primary School, Matara scoring 187 and 184 marks respectively.

Uyanwatta Primary School received the highest percentage of passers from the Matara Education Zone. Thirty students out of eighty who faced the examination got through.


Donation of drugs to the Cancer Hospital

Marjorie de Alwis International School, Nugegoda celebrated its founder's 86th birthday recently. Here, school principal Manik Jayasekera and senior staff donating drugs valued Rs 100,000 to the Cancer Hospital, Maharagama.


World Hindi Day Celebrations at ICC auditorium

Indian Cultural Centre (ICC), Colombo is organizing the "World Hindi Day" on January 10 from 3.30 pm to 7 pm in its auditorium at No.16/2 Gregory's Road, Colombo - 7. As part of the celebrations Certificates will be distributed to the students who passed the Hindi examinations and prizes will be given to the winners of the competitions held in Hindi Diwas 2012. It will be followed by a conference on 'Influence of Hindi in Sri Lanka.'

High Commissioner of India, Ashok K Kantha, will be inaugurating the conference as the Chief Guest.The participants in the conference will be Founder and Director of Hindi Niketan, Saranaguptha Weerasinghe, Prof. Lakshman Senevirathna, University of Kelaniya, Prof. Indralatha Dissanayake, (retired) University of Kelaniya and Nilanthi Rajapakse, University of Jayawardenepura.

The conference will be followed by a variety programme by ICC students.

The admission is free on first come first served basis.

La femme NIKITA

The movie, La femme NIKITA (1991) by Luc Besson will be screened on Tuesday, January 8 at 3 pm and Wednesday, January 9 at 6.30pm at Alliance Française de Colombo, 11, Barnes Place, Colombo 7.

Armed robbery of a pharmacy by a bunch of junkies in need of drug goes wrong: a shooting caused the death of several people, including a policeman, shot down by the young Nikita. Sentenced to life imprisonment, she soon meet Bob, a mysterious man forcing the young woman to work secretly for the Government. Après some revolts during an intensive training for several years, Nikita becomes an highly trained agent well qualified in the secret services, & according to Bob, now capable to handle alone outside matters.

The movie is most suitable for mature audience and is subtitled in English.
