The Sri Lankan Anti-Narcotics Association (SLANA) is a private
non-profit organization involved in the fight against drug abuse and for
the development of human resources in this country. Each year, they
design and produce a calendar for sale which is a source of funding to
carry out Anti Drug activities.
"Celebrating Sri Lanka's Wildlife" is the 2013 theme for the Sri
Lanka Anti-Narcotics Association's (SLANA) annual desktop calendar.
This year's theme, as in other years, is both informative and
colourful. Previously the desk calendars included the World Heritage and
Other Sites in Sri Lanka, Marine Life of Sri Lanka, Dances of Sri Lanka
and Stamps of Sri Lanka. The 2013 calendar will, yet again, be a
collector's item.
Sri Lanka's wildlife is diverse and beautiful. It is an important
part of our country. It is our wildlife that makes us standout from the
rest of the word. Although small in land area, our greatest diversity in
habitats allows us to harbor an amazing range of fauna and flora, with
many species endemic to the island.
The biggest threat to the earth's flora and fauna is habitat
destruction and degradation, followed by overexploitation of species.
Conservation is critical to maintaining ecosystems that we rely on to
sustain life. Our wildlife is an irreplaceable source of life and
inspiration. The scenes depicted in this year's SLANA calendar are only
a representative sample of the wonderful diversity of Sri Lanka's
wildlife. They are meant to remind us of the rich beauty found
throughout Sri Lanka. Contributors to the calendar include: Italian
artist Maurizio Boscheri (www.maurizioboscheri.it), who has depicted our
wildlife in bold colours, wildlife enthusiast Hiran de Silva (www.hirandesilvaphoto.com)
and amateur photographer Rajiv Welikala (http://wildlifediaries.blogspot.com).
The calendar is available at the SLANA office 5, Kirimandala Mawatha
and leading bookshops. |
