Agriculture Department experts advise residents to grow guava in the
home garden to obtain essential nutrients for growing bones and teeth.
The fruit is abundant with calcium essential for healthy growth of
bones and teeth, experts say. The country has around around 875 acres
(450 hectares) of guava cultivation according to official figures and
this is not satisfactory, experts say.
Currently, the Agriculture Department is carrying out an islandwide
programme in keeping with the national agriculture development drive Api
Wavamu- Rata Nagamu and guava is among the fruits picked especially for
the programme.
Horticulturists at the department have bred a range of varieties of
guava. Horana Rathu, Horana Rosi, Horana Sudu, Horana Sweet, Lanka
Giant, Red Giant and Pubudu are available at Agriculture Department
centres and other places throughout the country.
Currently, there are commercial guava cultivations in Hambantota,
Mannar, Moneragala and Puttalam districts, the Agriculture Department
said.
