Youth dies in house collapse

A youth died when the wall of a house collapsed during heavy rainfall in Henanigala Mahaweli colony. The victim, Uru Warige Samanta, 19, of Henanigala South succumbed to injuries.

Dehiattakandiya Police are investigating.


Guava cultivation promoted

Agriculture Department experts advise residents to grow guava in the home garden to obtain essential nutrients for growing bones and teeth.

The fruit is abundant with calcium essential for healthy growth of bones and teeth, experts say. The country has around around 875 acres (450 hectares) of guava cultivation according to official figures and this is not satisfactory, experts say.

Currently, the Agriculture Department is carrying out an islandwide programme in keeping with the national agriculture development drive Api Wavamu- Rata Nagamu and guava is among the fruits picked especially for the programme.

Horticulturists at the department have bred a range of varieties of guava. Horana Rathu, Horana Rosi, Horana Sudu, Horana Sweet, Lanka Giant, Red Giant and Pubudu are available at Agriculture Department centres and other places throughout the country.

Currently, there are commercial guava cultivations in Hambantota, Mannar, Moneragala and Puttalam districts, the Agriculture Department said.


Puttalam pre-school teachers trained

A Korean volunteer is engaged in training pre- school teachers under the supervision of the Puttalam Urban Council.

Around 50 pre-schools are functioning under the supervision of the Puttalam Urban Council.

According to Puttalam Urban Council Chairman K A Baiz, the Council holds the training programme in the children’s park in the Puttalam town.

The Korean volunteer was provided with an office located in the children’s section of the Puttalam public library.


Alumni reunion

The Alumni Association of the University of Peradeniya will hold a reunion on January 6 from 11 am at ‘The Lodge’, the residence of the Vice Chancellor.

The Pera- Alumni Reunion 2013 is an attempt to provide an opportunity for local and overseas alumni to revisit the University of Peradeniya and renew friendships.

A musical evening to collect funds for the Econ Graduates Collective of 78 – 82 will be held on January 5 at 6.30 pm at the Bishop’s College auditorium, Colombo.


Three deaths by drowning

Two persons drowned in Ma Oya in Metikotuwa, Dankotuwa on Tuesday.

Canisius Fernando, 46, and L Arthur Fernando of Dankotuwa, 58, died in the incident.

Meanwhile, a worker at a private construction company drowned in a canal in Thirappane while bathing.

M Sampath Shantha, 22, of Mawarala died in the incident.

The body was sent to the Anuradhapura hospital morgue for a post - mortem.

Thirappane Police are investigating.
