Pro-LTTE elements, NGOs backing CJ - academia

Members of the academia yesterday insisted that Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake is backed by pro-LTTE elements and Non Governmental Organizations trying to resuscitate the LTTE terrorist organization.

Speaking at a seminar organized by People’s Campaign for Justice at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, they said that the NGO bandwagon which launched massive campaign when the Security Forces were fighting terrorists are in the forefront against the impeachment of Chief Justice, which is totally constitutional.

They insisted that these insidious elements wanted to bring the country back to the gloomy era in which terrorism reigned by using the Chief Justice as a cat’s paw.

Patriotic National Movement President and prominent writer Dr. Gunadasa Amarasekera said that the LTTE proxies and supporters with the backing of NGO mafia were using various methods and tactics to divide the country, though the terrorist organization was militarily defeated by the Security Forces.

Dr. Amarasekera added that the political campaign based on impeachment motion against the Chief justice is the latest episode of their conspiracy.

Attorney at Law Anoma Gunathilake scoffed at the accusation from some quarters that complainants themselves are investigating the impeachment charges against Chief Justice Bandaranayake. She said that the impeachment motion was signed by a group of parliamentarians and these signatories have not been appointed to the Parliamentary Select Committee investigating into the impeachment charges.
