Josephians in quarters
St Joseph's College U-19 soccer team has proved to be an impressive
soccer side in the island this season. After a successful completion of
a season with friendly and invitation tournaments, Josephians are
performing well in the Milo 'A' Division tournament so far.
Captained by Sanjula Kalpa, Josephians played their first match in
the group stage against Ananda College at Darley road with all their
skill and experience, Joes won this game with 3 goals to 1. Next fixture
in the tourney was against Royal College. The match was played at Royal
College Sports Complex. The Josephian team showcased their supremacy
once again by finishing the game with a 4-0 easy victory.
Then they were drawn up against Hindu College. After a tight game,
Joes won all three points with a score line of 2-1. Next match was
played at Gampola against Wickramabahu College. Josephians came into the
game after a quite struggle. Surprisingly, they were not at their usual
form. The match was drawn 1-1.
Then again Joes had to travel to Kandy for their next game against
Dharmaraja College. The match was played at the Bogambara Stadium. Joes
won the match 4-0 with ease. Milan Charinda, Dumindu Gihan, Shehan
Siriwardane and Shalutha Jayakody cored a goal each to make their school
proud.
The final match of the group stage was played against De Mazenod
College, Kandana. Mazedonians scored the first goal through a corner and
were leading 1-0 at half time. Rajitha Viraj scored the equalizer for
Joes who were chasing from behind. In the dying minutes of the game,
Sanjula Kalpa scored the winner for the lads in Blue and White. Joes won
2-1. Josephians were crowned the group champions and will be heading
towards the quarter finals. Final stage of the tournament will work off
in Ratnapura towards the course of this week. |
