An elephant conservation centre will be set up at Lunugamwehera in 600 acres, Wildlife Deputy Minister S M Chandrasena said. He said construction work will begin next year. Construction work on an elephant conservation centre at Horowpothana is underway. It will be opened in 2013.

He said that this move will minimize the human elephant conflict.
