Illegal abattoir raided
Nikaweratiya Police on Tuesday raided an illegal abattoir that had
been in operation for a long time and arrested three suspects. Police
also seized beef taken from slaughtered seven cattle. The suspects,
residents of Kanuketiya, Apokkagama were produced in Nikaweratiya
Magistrate Courts yesterday.
Held with heroin and cannabis
Police arrested five suspects with 52.505 grammes of heroin and 1
kilogram of cannabis in their possession at Piliyandala, Mahaoya and in
Polgasovita on Tuesday.
The first suspect was arrested with 1.525 grammes of heroin in his
possession at a check point in Palanwaththa in Piliyandala while
travelling in a three wheeler.
He is a resident of Siddamulla.
Meanwhile, following a tip off, Mount Lavinia Police apprehended two
suspects with 50.98 grammes of heroin while transporting it in a three
wheeler.
The suspects drove past the Police when they first attempted to stop
them at Katubedda.
After a long pursuit, Police overtook the vehicle at Polgasovita.
The other two suspects were arrested in Mahaoya by police with one
kilogram of cannabis in their possession on the same day.
Investigations are continuing.
Workers arrested with the loot
Three workers who stole scaffolding bars and joists and other
implements worth over Rs 600,000 from a construction company store in
Narahenpita, were arrested by Welikada Police on Tuesday. They were
produced in Aluthkade no 4 Magistrate Courts yesterday.
Infant in watery grave
A nine months old infant who had been admitted to Darga town hospital
with its mother after they got into difficulty when they were dragged
away by water while crossing a canal in Welipenna, died on Tuesday.
The woman, a resident of Walagedara, Pallegoda with her son, Rusiru
Viraj in her hands, attempted to cross a canal in Kaduruwaththe when she
slipped and was dragged along the downstream.
People in the vicinity had saved them and rushed them to the
hospital.
Three bodies found
Three bodies of unidentified men were found by the Police in Wattala,
Chilaw and Welikada on Tuesday.
Acting on information received, Wattala Police found the body of a
man at the estuary of Kelani Ganaga in Palliyawatte, Hendala. The well
built man with a beard who appears to be of 35-40 years old was wearing
a red T shirt and black trousers. His face has been disfigured.
The second body was found in a deserted land in Sangakatmana, Chilaw.
The 5' tall man appears to be around 65-70 years old and was wearing a
blue shirt and a brown and white checked sarong. There is a tattoo of a
saint on his right arm.
Meanwhile, Welikada Police found the body of a man in a waste water
canal near a play ground in Obeysekarapura on the same day.
He appears to be of 28-30 years of age. He was in a T shirt and black
shorts. Investigations are continuing.
Man assaulted to death
A 48 year old labourer in a coir product factory has been bludgeoned
and assaulted with bricks to death in Angampitiya, Wennappuwa on Tuesday
morning. Police arrested the suspect who is said to be the paramour of
the victim's wife. I Nadaraja of Rideegama died in the incident.
Pregnant woman flees life
A 23 year old six months pregnant woman committed suicide by hanging
from a rafter of her house in Yoda Elagama in Eppawala on Monday night.
S Dilhani Madushani died in the incident. Investigations revealed that
the victim had hung herself while the husband had left home after a
quarrel between them when the husband attempted to consume alcohol at
home. |
