PSC on CJ impeachment appointed:

Environment Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa has been appointed
Chairman of the Special Parliament Select Committee (PSC) to probe
impeachment charges against Chief Justice Dr Shirani Bandaranayake,
Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa yesterday announced in Parliament.
Other members of the UPFA in the committee will be Ministers Nimal
Siripala de Silva, Susil Premajayantha, Rajitha Senaratne, Dilan Perera,
Wimal Weerawansa and Deputy Minister Neomal Perera.
In addition, Chief Opposition Whip John Amaratunga, MP Lakshman
Kiriella will represent the UNP, the DNA by MP Vijitha Herath and the
TNA by MP R Sampanthan A.
The PSC will inquire into the charges contained in the impeachment
motion presented against the Chief Justice and will report to
Parliament. The Speaker made this announcement at the commencement of
sittings yesterday. Meanwhile, the first sitting of the PSC had been
held at the Parliament complex yesterday evening under the chairmanship
of Minister Anura Yapa.
All members of the committee had attended the meeting. A member of
the committee said the facts discussed during the sittings could not be
revealed to the public according to the Standing Orders of Parliament
and the Constitution. |
