Chandrasena to tackle human-elephant conflict

Ministry has drawn attention to maintaining electric fences:

Agrarian Services and Wildlife Conservation Deputy Minister S M Chandrasena visited Dambaana and Rohana in Mahiyanganaya to look into the wild elephant-human conflict.

He discussed with residents and Wildlife Conservation Department officials from the Maaduruoya National Park and WCD offices in Gurukumbura, Galkada and Ulhitiya.

Chandrasena directed officials to work harder and promised that his ministry will co-operate with the public and officials to effectively manage the wild elephant-human conflict.

He said the Agrarian Services and Wildlife Conservation Ministry has drawn attention to maintaining electric fences bordering forests and villages, built to prevent wild elephants reaching villages.

The ministry has also decided to grow grass and build reservoirs in national parks and forest reserves, the deputy minister said. Badulla district Member of Parliament TenukaVidanagamage and Veddha Chieftain Uruvarige Wanniya were also present.
