They were deaf but not blind

Two partially deaf male teachers of the Anuradhapura Deaf and Blind School who had been arrested in connection with an incident where four underaged girls in the same school were abused on several occasions, have been placed in protective custody until November 26 by Anuradhapura chief magistrate and additional district judge Ruwandika Marapana yesterday.

Officers of the Anuradhapura Police Child and Women's Bureau arrested the suspects following a complaint lodged by the school authorities.

One of the girls who had been abused had alerted the authorities of the school by a letter written in brail.

Police investigations have revealed that the suspects have allegedly abused the four girls aged - 7, 10,12 and 14 on several occasions since 2010.

The suspects are to be produced in court on November 26. Anuradhapura Police are investigating.
