The government is encouraging the people to consume more rice and
rice based food instead of wheat flour based products.
The Anuradhapura Post Harvest Technology Institute has introduced a
range of rice flour based food and beverages parallel to the boom in
rice production.
Anuradhapura District Secretary Mahinda Seneviratne introduced 'rice
cream' an alternative to milk ice cream and soya ice cream at a District
Agriculture Committee meeting recently.
A team of researchers headed by Research Officer Hemanthika
Jayawardane succeeded in making the product.
Hemanthika said successful results were achieved by introducing 'rice
cream' under a research programme to innovate a range of desserts
produced out of rice flour.
Many countries have introduced ice cream varieties manufactured by
using ingredients such as soya milk instead of cows' milk. 'Rice cream'
will replace most popular soya milk ice cream.
This trend will help increase paddy production and create durable
marketing value to paddy.
