More paddy lands under the plough

Farmers in the Horowpathana Divisional Secretariat division will cultivate paddy on more than 12,300 acres during the current Maha Season utilizing tank irrigation, said Divisional Secretary Santha Dissanayake. Paddy and highland cultivations will be undertaken utilizing direct rain water too, he said. 


Ordination anniversary

Ven Seeduwe Sumanawansa Nayake Thera of the Raddoluwa Abhinawaramaya and Lekakhadhikari Gampaha District Shashanarakshaka Mandalaya marks the 42th anniversary of his ordination on October 31. An asheervada pinkama to invoke blessings on him will be held at the Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya on October 31 at 4 pm.

 


Appeal

W. Jayawathie, 64, of Ulugedara, Pitakatuwana, Mapalana, Kamburupitiya, is suffering from an acute heart ailment (triple vessel coronary Artery disease). Doctors have recommended an urgent bypass surgery to save her life. Jayawathie says the surgery is estimated to cost Rs 900,000.

She says she is unable to foot the bill due to her financial plight. She requests the public to assist her financially to expedite the surgery.

Nikshan Malinga, 5, a prematurely born child, a resident of Menikhinna, is suffering from poor vision. His father says that Nikshan is of low weight and suffering from neuron problem due problems encountered at birth where he was treated at the premature baby care unit for a considerable period. Nikshan's father says he has to spend a considerable sum monthly to get medical treatment which he is unable to afford due to his financial plight.

He requests the public to assist his child's cause by sending financial contributions to enable him to provide treatment for his child.

Katina Pinkama

The annual Katina Pinkama of the Seruwila Bauddha Madyasthanaya, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7 will be held on October 30 morning.

An all night pirith ceremony preceding the event will be held on October 29 followed by a heel dana on October 30 morning.







 


Daham Pasal students'evaluation

A Gampaha District Daham Pasala students' evaluation programme will be held at Yasodara Devi Balika Vidyalaya, Gampaha on October 28. A batch of 702 students who won the first place in a regional evaluation programme will attend this programme organized by Ven Seeduwe Sumanawansa Nayake Thera and Gampaha GA J J Ratnasiri under the patronage of Ven Welamitiyawe Kusaladhamma Thera. Students who win the first place at this district programme will qualify to attend the all island evaluation to be held at the Madempe Senanayake MMV shortly, said Gampaha District Shasanarakshaka Mandalaya Lekakhadhikari Seeduwe Sumanawansa Thera.


Lecture

A lecture on "One Hundred Years of Education for Blind Persons in Sri Lanka" organized by the Royal Asiatic Society will be delivered by Professor D P M Weerakkody, Department of Classical Languages, University of Peradeniya on October 30 at 5.00 pm at the Gamini Dissanayake Auditorium, Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo 7.

Prof Weerakkody was the first and only blind person in Sri Lanka to obtain a Ph.D and become a full university professor. He held two prestigious fellowships: the Commonwealth University Staff Fellowship (1987-1988) at University of Nottingham, and the SAARC Fellowship (2000-2001) at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.


Ananda College anniversary

Ananda college will celebrate its 126th anniversary on November 1 under the guidance of Principal L. M. D. Dharmasena. A series of meritorious acts will be conducted at the school with the participation of students, teachers and parents from October 31, including a Sangika Dhana to 35 Bhikkus on November 1.


Sarath Wimalasiri on Shraddhanjalee

The Sinhala National Service of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation will present a lyric composer poet and free lance journalist W K Sarath Wimalasiri over the Shraddhanjalee programme from 12.00 pm to 12.45 pm on October 29.
