Artefacts found near Ramba Viharaya excavation site

A range of vital artefacts have been found during archaeological
excavations performed at the Ramba Viharaya Complex situated 10 km off
Nonagama junction along the Embilipitiya Road in Ambalantota.

Among them are important stone inscriptions, ruins of arasayas, sypas,
pilimages, guard stones and a 25 foot deep well belonging to the
Polonnaruwa period made of brick, which suggests that human habitats
existed in the region from Second Century BC.
Seven guard stones depecting snake hoods have been found at a site
where Queen Sugala is believed to have kept the Sacred Tooth and Bowl
Relics under safe custody, said Site Manager HMC Weerasinghe Bandara.
