Muzammil at the helm of Moors SC
The proceeding of the Centenary Annual General Meeting of the Moors'
Sports Club was enlivened by the presence of nonagenarian (92 years)
Ahamed Athas Kuthdoos, a Great Cricket of yesteryear.
Athas Kuthdoos played for Moors Sports Club during the period
1954/70, under the mercurial Captain Makkin Salih a popular player in
the then Gopalan Trophy Tournament played between Ceylon and South
India.
A left arm leg spin bowler of fame Athas Kuthdoos holds the record of
taking 7 wickets for 9 runs against Ananda College playing for Wesley
College in 1940.
The Moors members wished him long life and good health. A.J.M.
Muzammil, (Mayor of Colombo) was re-elected as the President of the Club
while A.H.M. Azwer, MP and Omar Z. Kamil (former Mayor Colombo/Special
Commissioner) as Vice President. M. Shafeek Rajabdeen (former MP) was
elected as Immediate Past President while Dr. A.M. Mubarak retained his
position as the General Secretary.
The President announced, that Omar Abdul Sattar and S.H.M. Aslam will
be representing Sri Lanka at the forthcoming Billiards Championship to
be held in Leeds, UK. They won the National Billiards became winner and
runner-up respectively. Also they were presented with a Gold Medals as
token of appreciation.
Medals were also presented to P.A.M. Badurdeen (Kattankudy) for
winner the Colombo District Billiard Championship and to Faisal Haniffa
for becoming Champion at the All Island Billiard Tournament.
Muzammil, President said that Moors Sports Club is one of the oldest
Sports body in the Capital City and had produced many national players
of repute particularly in the field of Cricket and Billiards. The Club
has done very well during the period under review in sports and other
activities. The Moors Sports Club grounds in now a sought after venue
for practice matches of the World T20 tournament, including Women' World
Teams.
