Hooch spot at lake resort

Two persons who found guilty of distilling and selling illicit liquor at a lake resort at Medawachchiya, Pihimbiyagollawa, was find Rs. 117,000 by Medawachchiya Magistrate Chandima Edirimanna.

Medawachchiya Police apprehended the suspects.


Sing- a- Long as fund raiser

The Automobile Association of Ceylon will hold a fund-raiser at the BMICH New Main Hall from 7 pm on November 2, in aid of the Peter Weerasekera Children’s Home at Dambuwa, Buthpitiya.

The fund-raiser will be in the form Sing-A-Long featuring Ronnie Leitch and Cosmic Ray Band.

The Home is over 50 years old and provides shelter for destitute orphaned girls. For information, contact Anton Kandiah or Firoza on 011-2446074.


Commemorative ceremony

The annual commemoration ceremony of the late Eng. (Dr.) A.N.S Kulasinghe, one of the greatest engineers that Sri Lanka has produced, will be held at the Wimalasurendra Auditorium of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) at 120/15, Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 7 today at 5.15 pm.


Uva PC third session

The third sessions of the fifth Uva Provincial Council will be opened by Uva Governor C Nanda Mathew at the Provincial Council auditorium today at 10 am.

The agenda will include the reading of the council's policy statement by Governor Mathew after which chairman Chandana Welivita will adjourn the meeting.


Emergency Treatment Unit opening

Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena will open the new Emergency Treatment Unit of the Matara General Hospital today.


Prize giving

The Annual prize giving 2011 of Ananda College will be held in the Kularathne Hall, Ananda College, Colombo today at 2.00 pm. Solicitor General Javaharlal Yuwanjana Wanasundara will be the chief guest.

 


 

Buddhist talk

Ven Yogavadara Rahula will deliver a public talk in English on 'Mindfulness of the Body - the Doorway to freedom' at a meeting of the Servants of the Buddha Society on October 27 at 4.30pm at Maithree Hall, Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya.


Haj programme over SLBC

The Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation Muslim Service has organised a special Muslim programme to mark the Haj Festival on October 27 from 8am.

Special prayers and sermons will be broadcast live from 8.30am to 9.30am from the Maligawatte Jumma Mosque.


Manaquib Thamaam Majlis

The 125th Manaquib Thamaam Majlis in memory of Saint Sulthanul Aarifeen Seyedna Ahamadul Kabeerur Rifayee will be held on October 28 at 10.30am at the Kapuwatte Mohideen Jumma Mosque, Denipitya, Weligama.

It will be held under the patronage of Rifai Moulana Alhaj U P S Muhammad Ashique Thangal.


New Dhamma Hall opening

The opening ceremony of a building complex for a Dhamma and alms giving hall, built at a cost of over Rs. 9.5 million will be opened at the Ananda Buddhist Meditation Centre, Indigolla, Gampaha on October 26 at 2.15 pm. Chief Sanghanayake of the Senadhi Four Korales and Ananda Buddhist Meditation Centre Incumbent Ven. Buthpitiye Samitha Nayake Thera will deliver the Anusasana.

A Katina Pinkama and Katina Anusasana will be held on November 10.


Handicrafts exhibition

A local handicrafts exhibition and fair organized by the National Crafts Council will be held at the Kuliyapitiya Town Hall from October 25 to 28. Items, such as, batiks,embroidery and lace work, locally manufactured textiles, Sesath, Dumbara mats, masks brass ware, silver jewellery and rush and reed warewill be available for sale.

The Ceylon Bible Society presents 'Handful of Tranquility', an exhibition and sale to commemorate Elders' Day on October 26, 27 form 9 am to 5pm at Christ Church, Dehiwela Parish Hall.


Musical show

The "Sindupani Kavi Gee" musical show staged at the Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapksa Theatre on September 13 will be telecast on Derana TV on October 26.

The show, which features songs composed by Admiral (Rtd.) Somathilake Dissanayake, received wide acclaim for its aesthetic rendition of the songs' themes interspersed with colourful dance performances. President Mahinda Rajapaksa was the Chief Guest at the event attended by prominent artistes,composers and well- wishers.
