President in Dubai to participate in Dubai World Energy Forum
President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday arrived in Dubai to participate
in the World Energy Forum 2012. Over 2,000 delegates, including 22 Heads
of States are expected to attend the World Energy Forum 2012. The Forum
will be held at Dubai’s International Convention and Exhibition Centre
for three days. In the meantime, the UAE government has decided to
summon a forum where all First Ladies of the countries being represented
at the World Energy Forum will participate, states a Presidential Media
Division press release.
The World Energy Forum has chosen Dubai as the venue to host this
event, because of Dubai’s geographic location and its political
stability. This will be the first time that this high-level
International Energy Conference will be taking place outside the
headquarters of the United Nations. Earlier, two fora were held with the
attendance of Heads of State and leaders of the energy field.
The United Nations has designated 2012 as the International Year of
Sustainable Energy for All. At the Forum, leaders will seek tangible
progress towards cleaner, safer and more sustainable energy as well as
achieving universal access to modern energy services.
One of the primary objectives of this conference is to chart a road
map for a sustainable energy mix that can fuel global economic and
social development.
The forum provides a unique opportunity to exchange new ideas on
global energy issues from the perspectives of policy, technology, and
business.
Ruler of Dubai and Vice President and Prime Minister of the United
Arab Emirates Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum has suggested that
October 22 of each year be declared as International Energy Day.
First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa, External Affiars Minister Prof. GL
Peiris, MP Sajin Vaas Gunawardena, Western Provincial Councilor Noufer
Fouzie and Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga are accompanying
the President on the visit. |
