Captain dies of heart attack

The body of a captain of a Saudi Arabian ship, who died in the seas nine nautical miles from Galle, was brought to the Karapitiya Hospital for the post - mortem. The victime was identified as Jose Gabana, 53, a Filipino.

National Fertilizer Week

Ceremonies to mark the National Fertilizer Week will be held countrywide from October 20-24. The national ceremony to mark Fertilizer Week will be held at Salgado Grounds, Anuradhapura on October 20 at 9.30 am presided by Agriculture Services and Wildlife Acting Minister S M Chandrasena.

Special awareness programmes on fertilizer application will be held during the week at all 558 Agrarian Services Centres countrywide in addition to other programmes.

Agricultural Insurance Scheme for farmers

The Agrarian Services Department on the instructions of President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa will formulate plans to enrol all farmers in the country in the Agricultural Insurance Scheme, from the Maha season this year, said Agricultural Services and Wildlife Acting Minister SM Chandrasena.

“Farmers can join this scheme by paying a premium of Rs. 500 per season,This scheme would enable farmers to pay compensation payments for cultivation losses caused by natural calamities,” he said.
