Allowance for houses affected by garbage

The Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities Ministry has taken measures to provide a monthly rent allowance for families who lost their houses due to the garbage dump in Kolonnawa, to rent a house for a two year period until permanent houses are provided, said Construction Engineering Services Housing and Common Amenities Minister Wimal Weerawansa at a discussion held at the ministry.

About 163 houses in Kolonnawa were damaged due to the effect of the garbage dump in Kolonnawa as a result of water seepage.

“The ministry plans to provide permanent houses close to the Kolonnawa area, after discussions with the President and the Defence and Urban Development Secretary,” the minister said. Due to the gravity of the tall garbage dumps, a number of houses in Kolonnawa, Meethotamulla, Dhamapura and Pansalhena, 101 Waththa, 63 Waththa are in danger of being buried, putting the lives of 500 families in danger.
