The investigations led by Dehiwala Police in connection with an
incident where a couple was arrested for abducting seven persons in
Piliyandala on Friday have not been carried out with any bias, said
Police Media Spokesman SSP Prishantha Jayakodi.
He said Police will take legal action against anyone causing
incitement against religions without bias, and that certain incident
occurred as a result of personnel attitudes.
The Media Spokesman made these remarks after a group of about 300
people including monks staged a protest opposite Piliyandala Police in
connection with the action taken by Police.
On October 12, Piliyandala Police and the 119 information centre
received two complaints stating that seven persons had been abducted
from a house in Batakeththara, Piliyandala.
Meanwhile, the abducted persons were handed over to Dehiwala Police
around 2.30 am yesterday by the couple whom Police later arrested.
Investigations revealed that a youth, a Buddhist by religion, who was
the son of the arrested couple had married a Christian girl without his
parent’s consent and had come to a new house in Piliyandala. On their
arrival, their friends had organized a prayer session.
The bride groom’s parents had arrived at that house and taken seven
men and handed them to Dehiwala Police.
Dehiwala Police after investigations arrested the bride groom’s
parents and handed them to Piliyandala Police.
It was also revealed that the bride’s parents had alerted the Police
about the abduction. The couple were remanded on being produced in
Piliyandala Magistrate’s Court.
The newly married couple had contacted Police and agreed to a mutual
compact with the consent of the two parties and to withdraw their
complaints against each other. Police will continue procedures as
directed by Courts.
