Outstation Schools to the fore

The team events of the National Schools Sports Festival 2012 were
held prior to the athletic events which will be held at Beliatta D A
Rajapakse Stadium. Royal College , Colombo dominated the team events
category by grabbing four championship including under 19 boy's carrom,
badminton, basketball and under 15, 17, 19 swimming.But outstation
school came to the fore by winning several events.
Visakha vidyalaya emerged under 19 netball champions when they
defeated favourites HFC, Kurunegala. In the boys’ under 19 badminton ,
Royal College, Colombo emerged champions while D S Senanayake and Ananda
College, Colombo emerged runners up and third place respectively. A well
known school in sports, Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda was not dominant
as they used to be but secured championship in the boys under 15
category.
A school from outstations, Lankagama Modal School, Deniyaya won the
boys’ under 15 volleyball final when they defeated Keerthiratne MV,
Kobbewala.
St Xavier's Boys’ College, Mannar overcame Manipay Hindu College,
Jaffna in the boys football final. Aluthwewa MV, Polonnaruwa stole the
limelight when they emerged champions in the under 17 and 19 girls’
weight lifting. Apart from that many outstation schools came forward by
winning championships making the event a truly all island participation.
