Elderly man axed to death

A 97 - year - old man in Gampola was axed to death on Sunday evening.

Gampola Police arrested the suspect and produced him before the Gampola magistrate yesterday. Police said the victim, Neyya Mohommad, was mentally retarded.

Female body in Kalu Ganga

Kalutara South Police commenced an investigation to ascertain the identity of a woman whose body was found floating in the Kalu Ganga on Sunday afternoon.

The well - built woman appears to be around 40 years, and was attired in a black blouse and a black and green skirt.

The body is lying at the Nagoda Hospital morgue.

Missing man's body found

Matara Police found the body of a man with his head and arms cut off, in a forest on Sunday.

The man had been reported missing the previous day.

Police began investigations following a complaint by the victim's mother that her son, W K Chamin Thushara, 26, of Walawatta, Hittetiya East had gone missing.

Police found the body in Kirula Kele.

Investigations are continuing.

Arrested with pistol, grenade

A resident of Hemmatagama was arrested by Kegalle Police with a foreign made pistol, 13 bullets and a hand grenade on Sunday.

He was produced before the Kegalle magistrate yesterday.

Cannabis haul seized

Embilipitiya Police arrested a suspect with 74 kilos of cannabis worth over Rs 3.33 million while transporting it at Mahapelessa on Sunday afternoon. He was produced before the Embilipitiya magistrate yesterday.

Boy slashed to death

Moneragala Police commenced a search operation to arrest suspects in connection with an incident where a 16 - year - old boy was slashed to death while his mother was seriously injured when they were attacked by an unidentified gang in their house.

The incident occurred in Kumbukkana, Monaragala yesterday morning. The gang entered the house by force and attacked the mother and the son with sharp objects.
