Tips from Police to identify counterfeit notes

The Police yesterday urged the public to be careful as they have received a number of complaints regarding counterfeit notes. They have detected counterfeit notes in the denominations of Rs 500, Rs 1,000, Rs 2,000 and Rs 5,000. A Police spokesman said fake notes can be handed over hidden inside a bundle of original notes.

“When receiving a bundle of notes, it is always safe to count them,” he said.

The spokesman said most often, counterfeit notes are used in rural areas.

He requested shop keepers to be vigilant when dealing with strangers.

The spokesman requested the public to immediately inform the Police in case one receives a counterfeit note. The Police requested the public to pay attention to the following.

* When holding the note against a light, the vertically printed value should be visible.

* The edges of a genuine note are thicker.

* Check for the ‘bar’ ( a black strip inside the note).

* Check for the water mark of the note if suspicious.

* A fake note is thicker than an original.
