Seven hospitalised in Mirissa

Four Coast Guard officers and three civilians were hospitalized after a tense situation erupted between the Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) personnel of Mirissa and the villagers at Mirissa on Sunday night.

The incident occurred when some youths in the area had approached two CG personnel who were on duty inside Mirissa fishing harbour, throwing fire crackers at them.

SLCG Media Spokesman Lt Commander Chandana Bulegoda Arachchi said the civilian group tried to take the weapons of duty personnel where the CG personnel had to use minimum effort to defend themselves and the weapons.

The clash between them injured four CG perssonel and were admitted to Karapitiya Hospital and Boossa Navy Hospital.

Meanwhile, a member of Mirissa - Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha who was involved in the incident said he was assaulted by an armed group.
