Wimal says attack timed for world media
National Freedom Front (NFF) Leader and Construction, Engineering
Services, Housing and Common Amenities Minister Wimal Weerawansa
yesterday condemned the attack on Judicial Services Commission (JSC)
Secretary Manjula Tilakaratne, whoever the perpetrators are and called
on the authorities to take prompt steps to bring the culprits to book.
Issuing a statement, the minister said it was clear that the
perpetrators of this deed had carefully selected the occasion for the
attack at a time the world media is in the country to cover the finals
of the World T20 Cricket finals between Sri Lanka and the West Indies,
hoping that the incident will gain the maximum world exposure.
The minister drew parallel with the 2007 World Cup in the Carribean
when the LTTE carried out an aerial attack on the day of the final
between Sri Lanka and Australia in the hope of attracting similar
attention in the world media.
“Those international forces who attempted to divide the country
through the LTTE following the defeat of the terrorist outfit, was today
attempting to engineer a clash between the Executive, Legislature and
the Judiciary, which are the institutions executing the people’s
sovereignty and are using these tactics to destabilize and divide the
country,” the minister observed.
