Body found

Katugastota Police on Monday found a decomposed body of a man in Mahaweli river opposite the Katugastota district hospital. The 5'5" tall man was wearing blue trousers and a brown checked shirt. The body was sent to Kandy Base hospital morgue for the post mortem.


Floating body found

A body of a man floating at Lanciya beach in Wattala was found by Wattala Police on the same day. The deceased was identified as 54 year old R Mohandas of Welisara, Ragama. The post mortem was held yesterday at the Ragama hospital.


Foetus found

Acting on information received, Deraniyagala Police found a dead foetus in a drain behind line rooms in an estate in Udabagewatte on Monday. Further investigations revealed that an 18 year old student, a resident of the same place had delivered the foetus as a result of an illicit relationship with a man who had given some pills when the girl got labour pains on Saturday. The girl then had delivered the foetus in the toilet the next day night and thrown it in the drain.

She was admitted to Awissawella hospital for a medical test. Police arrested the alleged suspect and produced him before the Awissawella Magistrate's Court yesterday. Further investigations are continuing.


Five injured in wasp attack

Two male and three female labourers were hospitalized after being attacked by wasps in a tea estate in Suriyakanda, Kolonna on Monday.

One person was transferred to Embilipitiya hospital in a critical condition, while the others are being treated at Suriyakanda hospital.


Hardware items destroyed in fire

A stock of hardware items including door locks, hinges, nails, paints and thinner were destroyed after a cadjan thatched store room caught fire at a housing project in East Kukkulai, Mullaitivu on Monday. The fire is reported to have been caused after a garbage dump was set on fire engulfing the hut, Police investigations revealed. Mullaitivu Police are investigating.


Arrested with gun

Two suspects were arrested with a Repeater Gun while transporting it in a van at Pahalagoraka Oya, Navalapitiya on Monday. The suspects, residents of the same area were produced in the Navalapitiya Magistrate's Court yesterday.


Camera thief nabbed

A 21-year-old man who stole a digital camera worth Rs 100,000 from a Chinese national at a private company in Narammala was arrested with the stolen item by Kuliyapitiya Police. The suspect, a resident of Katupotha was the assistant to the Chinese national in the company where they worked.
