Kisara Kodithuwakku said that he was much delighted over his achievement of being the island’s first in the Year Five Scholarship Examination.

Commenting on his success he further said,” I came to know about my success at the examination through the internet.

Though I worked hard in getting ready for the examination I did not expect to be the all island’s first. I was highly delighted to know my great achievement. My result is a great honour to my school. I actively participated in a number of extracurricular activities in the school. I also without fail took part in extra classes conducted by the school.

I am a junior prefect of the college and a member of the school Chess team which could notch up several district and all island victories. Additionally I was a member of the college music band. But any of those activities did not hamper my educational activities.

While engaging in educational activities I enjoyed some selected programmes on the TV too. I did my studies everyday till 9 p.m. I never exert my energy unwantedly by breaking rest the whole night. My mother and father guided me in my studies. They provided me with pastpapers and supplementary books needed for the Year Five Scholarship Examination. My ambition is to be an engineer.

Kisara Kodithuwakku’s mother Dr. Anoma Erandathi Weerasinghe serves at the Galle Mahamodara Teaching Hospital while his father Dr. Kelum Kodituwakku works as the Chief Medical Officer of Health at the Arachchikanda Rural Hospital, Hikkaduwa.

The principal of the college was very much keen about our performances and he provided us with all needed facilities,” he said. Richmond College Principal E. M. S. Ekanayake commenting on Tisara Sanduka’s accomplishment said it was a historic triumph for the college.

“I congratulate my dedicated teachers for this victory which has brought much glory to the college. Our teachers worked according to a well formulated plan to guide our children.

The teachers of the college primary section launched a special project to guide our children.

Upeksha Madhuwanthi Rathnayake of Thalathuoya Maha Primary school in Kandy who also obtained 196 marks at the examination said that she was actively involved in academic and extra curricular activities equally. She is the eldest daughter of a family of two.

Maduwanthi had come to know that she emerged islandwide first at the Year Five Scholarship Examination while she was visiting the planetarium in Colombo yesterday. “My parents are farmers and they always encouraged me to go for achievements .

The third placed W. M. Sachith Saditya Bandara Wickramasinghe of Kandana is a student of the Seventh Day Adventist High School in Rilaulla, Kandana.

The Principal of the school Samarakoon Bandara stated that the student was dedicated and committed. He added that the specialty of the student was that he was a thorough reader and reads a large number of books other than the school books. He added that another unique feature of the student was that he had not attended private tuition for the examination but attended school regularly and did his studies well at school.

He added that out of the 127 students who sat for the scholarship examination from the school 26 have been passed. Only 19 passed last year and he set a target for the four teachers in Grade 5 and all other teachers in the primary section to take measures to pass 25 students.

He added that the teachers had done remarkably well and he thanked them. The Principal further said that the support from the parents towards the success of Sachith is also commendable. His mother was a teacher and father an engineer.

They had created the necessary environment for the child to do his studies successfully. he said.
