Cannabis transporters remanded

Two suspects transporting 5.250 kgs of cannabis in a three wheeler at First Mile Post along Mahiyangana Road on Saturday were remanded until September 9 by the Bibile magistrate. The suspects were produced before court by Bibile Police.

Search op for drowned man

Mount Lavinia Police launched a search operation to find the body of a man who drowned while bathing in the sea at Mount Lavinia on Sunday.

M R Lakmal, 24, from Watarappola Road, Mount Lavinia faced the mishap.

The man had short hair and was attired in shorts and a blue long sleeved t – shirt.

Machine operator dies in accident

A machine operator who was seriously injured after he accidentally got entangled with a machine while operating it in a private factory in Horana, succumbed to his injuries at Horana Hospital on Sunday.

M Thilina Isantha, 18, of Jinarathana Road, Gintota died in the incident. Horana Police are investigating.

Boy dragged away by crocodile

Akuressa Police launched a search operation for a 12- year- boy who was dragged away by a crocodile while bathing at an unprotected ferry (thotupola) in Nilwala river on Sunday around 4pm. The victim was identified as Selvan Roshan of Paraduwa.

Escaped prisoner arrested after six years

A prisoner of Welikada Prison who escaped six years ago in Poranuwatte, Peliyagoda was arrested by Western Province North Police officers on Sunday.

The suspect, a 25- year - old resident of Kataragama and Kandy was serving a prison term after pleading guilty for possessing cannabis. Investigations are continuing.

Police probe man's death

Ambalangoda Police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found lying on a road in Kaluwadumulla on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as P V Sumanasiri de Silva, 52. The post- mortem was due yesterday.

Meanwhile, Police found the body of a man at Modera which had drifted into Kelani Ganga after he jumped into the river at Kelani Palama. Police found his body after six hours.

The victim was identified as A H M Lahiru Dileepa, 22, of Gonawala.

The body was sent to police morgue for the post - mortem.Grandpass Police are investigating.

Raid on distillery

Pannala Police raided an illicit liquor distillery in Pathigoda Gedara, Kandana and arrested two suspects.

Forty three barrels of goda, 800 bottles of illicit liquor and a roll of copper coil were also seized.

They were produced before the Kuliyapitiya magistrate yesterday.

Pannala Police are investigating.

Floating body found

Yatiyantota Police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found floating in the Kelani Ganga at Thanakolawatte on Sunday.

The man about five feet six inches in height and well- built, appeared to be between 50 and 60 years.

Police seek public assistance to identify the victim.

Robbery suspects behind bars

Four suspects wanted in connection with a series of crimes including burglary and house breaking were arrested by Ganemulla Police on Saturday at Ganemulla, Gampaha and Weliweriya. The Police recovered part of the stolen items including jewellery stolen from seven houses and shops. Gampaha magistrate remanded the suspects until today.
