Overwhelming victory for govt - Minister Vasudeva

The government recorded an overwhelming victory whilst the UNP suffered a major debacle and the JVP was routed, recording a significant defeat at the Sabaragamuwa, North Central and Eastern Provincial Council Polls, states National Languages and Social Integration Minister and Democratic Left Front Leader Vasudeva Nanayakkara in a statement issued on the results of the Provincial Council elections held on September 8. 2012. Minister Nanayakkara’s statement adds:

“There is a relative decrease in the number of votes cast in comparison with the previous Provincial Council Elections conducted in the said Provinces, the statement adds.

“If you analyze the results of the polls carefully/clinically, there is a clear reduction in the number of votes cast for the UNP in all three Provinces.

“In the East, the votes cast for the TNA too shows a similar trend. TNA tried their level best to exhibit to the world that they have a huge backing and majority of the people would support them.

“However, the results do not depict this status. The result of the Eastern Provincial Council polls clearly indicates that there is no place whatsoever for separatism and the Tamil people do not endorse such a status.

“It is also very clear that majority of the people in the East support the Government and have given a clear mandate for them on this occasion as well and further, to continue implementing its’ policies.

“ The UNP has recorded a major loss in the votes cast for them in comparison with the previous elections. In 2008, the number of votes cast for the UNP included the votes of the supporters of the Muslim Congress as well. However, since the Muslim Congress decided to contest as a single party, the reduction in the number of votes cast for the UNP is clearly seen.

“We believe the UPFA will continue to govern the Eastern Province.”
