W.A. Vikum Madushanka , 20, of No. 29, Pallewella Hungamuwa, is
suffering from bone cancer and has been recommended an urgent bone
salvaging surgery in India which is estimated to cost Rs. 700,000.
His parents say that they are not in a position to foot this bill and
request the public and philanthropists to assist his cause by sending
whatever contribution possible to expedite the surgery. All

NHDA art, essay contest
The National Housing Development Authority(NHDA) has organised an all
island Art, Essay and Poster competition for schoolchildren to mark
World Habitat Day which falls on October 1.The competition themed
‘Habitats renewed-opportunities created’ is open to students in
government and private schools .
The art competition will be in three categories: (1). Grades 1 to
5,(2). Grades 6 to 10 and (3). Grades 11 to 13. The essay competition
will be held in two categories. (1). Grades 6 to 10 and (2). Grades 11
to 13.
The poster competition will be restricted to students in Grades 10 to
13 only, states a NHDA Information and Publicity Division press release.
The winners will be awarded valuable cash prizes and there will also be
five merit awards in each category. Creations can be sent in any of the
three languages.

Seminar for teachers
The project on Green Lane for School Kids implemented by the National
Organization of Sri Lanka with funds provided by Mitsubishi Corporation
of Japan in association with Mitsubishi Corporation of Colombo Branch
will conduct a Seminar for teachers of Primary Grades in Government
Schools situated in Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara districts as a
additional programme of the Green Lane Project on September 14 from 9.30
a.m. to 12.30 p.m. at the Auditorium of National Youth Council Centre,
Maharagama.
The main resource person on this occasion is former Colombo
University Senior Lecturer and National Programme on Recycling of Solid
Waste founder Ms. Ajantha Perera.
The objective of the seminar is to educate the teachers on the
present environmental conditions prevailing in Sri Lanka and provide the
schoolchildren advice, guidance and assistance on various aspects of the
environment especially on the rapid increase in Global Warming.
Blaze in Lanka-bound vessel in India
A major fire broke out on a Sri Lankan bound merchant vessel off the
coast of Mumbai, India yesterday, NDTV reported. The 54,405 ton vessel
MV Amsterdam Bridge was carrying chemical cargo.
The vessel had reached the Jawaharlal Nehru Port in the wee hours of
September 8 and was en route to Sri Lanka. It was to reach Colombo
today. The Coastguard received the first SOS call at 5.15pm from the
Captain of the Antigua and Barbuda-flagged cargo vessel, following which
two Coastguard ships - Samudra Prahari and Subhadra Kumari Chouhan -
were pressed into action. The crew was rescued immediately. However,
when these two ships could not contain the fire, two more ships -
Sankalp and ICGS Sangram - were roped in, along with an emergency towing
vessel. At around 8 pm , the fire was almost contained, but reignited
because of the chemical nature of the cargo. Another ship was called

A prison museum soon

All measures are in place to establish a prison museum and it will be
set up soon in Sri Lanka, Prison Reforms and Rehabilitation Minister
Chandrasiri Gajadeera said recently.
Preliminary studies are carried out and a list of the places and
items of historical value that are found in the Sri Lankan prisons are
being compiled now, he added.
A manager of property and societies has been appointed in this
regard, the minister said. Minister Gajadheera said that Sri Lanka
Prisons which started during the colonial period have many historical
records, documents, arts and crafts, equipment, machinery and places.
The minister highlighted the prison laundry that was opened in 1870
and still runs after a recent renovation by prisoners. The minister
plans to conserve and display the historical items found in prisons.
Literary festival
Kaduwela literary festival on the theme of “mission of language and
literature of Lanarol’s” organized by the Kaduwela Divisional
secretariat will be held with the participation of Construction,
Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities Minister Wimal
Weerawansa, Petroleum Industries Minister Susil Premajayantha and
Culture and the Arts Minister T.B.Ekanayake at Kethewatta, Kaduwela
today.
English Day competitions
The provincial English Day competitions of Sabaragamuwa Province will
be held from September 12-14. The competitions will be held at
Eheliyagoda Central College, Eheliyagoda Dharmapala College and
Eheliyagoda RESC.
The Assistant Directress of Education (English) for Sabaragamuwa
Province D.L. Nugalitha Kalyani said that all the competitors had been
informed through the principals of their respective schools.

Skeleton in paddy field

A skeleton had been found in a paddy field in the Horana area on
Saturday morning. The paddy field is located near the Horana,
Vidyarathna Pirirven temple and there was a stream in the paddy field.
The skeleton was close to the stream and there was no skull on the
skeleton. A villager who had gone to pluck coconuts from a coconut tree
in the paddy field spotted the skeleton.
