Jaffna Schools stun Trinity in Murali Harmony Cup

Jaffna Combined Schools defeated Trinity College, Kandy yesterday in one of the opening matches of Murali Harmony Cup 2012. Jaffna youths in an action packed Twenty20 stunned favourites Trinity College which was the highlight of the opening day where 10 matches were played in Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mankulam, Oddusuddan and Vavuniya.

An unbeaten 37 from man of the match Edward Edin brought victory to Jaffna Combined with two overs to spare in reply to Trinity’s 100 in 19.4 overs having batted first. K Shirojan of Jaffna Combined took 4 for 16.

Sri Lanka all rounder Angelo Mathews was there before the match to give the lads a pep talk.

Mannar-Vavuniya Combined vs Debarawewa

Mannar – Vavuniya Combined School Team overcame Debarawewa MV with the help of o a brilliant 67 by days top scorer K Hariparanan at the same venue. Debarawewa from Hambantota scored a challenging 159 for 8 but the opponents grabbed a last over win .

Batti-Trinco Combined vs St Peter’s

St. Peter’s College overcame Trincomalee and Batticaloa Combined Schools by one wicket at Kilinochchi Central Grounds. Jason Buultjens hit a match winning knock of 56 which brought him the man of the match award.

Seenigama vs Kilinochchi Combined

Earlier in the morning at the same venue Kilinochchi Combined Schools were beaten by Seenigama by 43 runs. Seenigama who batted first were bundled out for 130 in 15.5 overs. They fought back with the ball and restricted Kilinochchi for 87 for 9 in their 20 overs. Pulina Tharanga of Seenigama, the Sri Lanka under 19 all rounder won the man of the match award.

One of the venue was upgraded Kilinochchi Central College grounds and both matches caught the eyes of a large number of spectators while enjoying live music, papare bands and a gymnastics display by the Sri Lanka Army.

Earlier Sri Lanka cricketers Mahela Jayawardena and Kumar Sangakkara opened the newly-built IODR Oval in the previously war-affected northern town of Oddusuddan in Mullaitivu which is the flagship venue of the 20 team reconciliation tournament staged to promote community building and friendship in Sri Lanka.

The tournament has brought development in which barren sports fields were transformed into a functioning cricket facility for local children with the addition of a large pavilion, toilets, astro-turf cricket nets, scoreboard, sightscreens, an improved outfield, coconut-matting centre wicket and general beautification including the planting of trees.
