Floating body recovered

Yatiyantota Police commenced an investigation into the death of a man whose body was found floating in Mee Oya near Polatumaga in Yatiyantota on Saturday. The body is in a state of decomposition and has been eaten by fish in the river. He was wearing a black short sleeved shirt and blue checked sarong. Police seek public assistance to identify the body.

Train knocks down man

A man was killed when he was knocked down by a train plying from Vavuniya to Omanthei at Wairapuliyankulam on the same day. Police identified the deceased as 42 year old D Gunaraja of Railway Avenue, Wairapuliyankulam. The body was sent to Vavuniya hospital morgue. Vavuniya police are investigating.

Investigation into new born's death

Following a complaint lodged by a man the Teldeniya Police have commenced an investigation in to an incident where a woman, a resident of Putuhapuwa has dumped her new born in a toilet pit after delivery at her home on August 29. The police said that the women's husband who was away from home at the time of the incident returned home about two weeks later and had found that his wife had delivered the baby at home and when the infant died after three hours she had dumped the body in a drainage pit in the adjoining house. The husband then lodged a complaint at Teldeniya Police who took over investigations.

Couple abandon children

Pamunugama Police have commenced a search operation to arrest a man and a woman who had abandoned their two children , a boy aged six and a two year old girl at their home in Meda Nugape in Pamunugama on Friday. Acting on information received the Police found the two abandoned kids at their home. The Wattala magistrate's court ordered to hand over the boy to Katunayake Lakshmi Children's home and the girl to Panadura Prajapathi Children's home. Investigations revealed that their parents were having frequent problems between them.

Illegal migrants arrested

Two persons who had been arrested for attempting to illegally migrate to another country via a sea route from Aluthwatte, Chilaw have been remanded until September 11 by Chilaw magistrate. Chilaw Police arrested the two suspects, residents of Murukkan and Vavuniya on Friday.

Suspect detained for interrogation

A suspect who was arrested with 20.960 grammes of heroin in his possession at Kurullapone was ordered to be kept under seven days detention for interrogation after produced in Maligakanda No 2 magistrate court. Kirulapone Police arrested the suspect on Friday from a house in Kitulwatte Road.

Four suspects arrested with forged notes

Four suspects were arrested by Negombo division anti vice squad with 149 forged notes of Rs 1,000 denomination in their possession. A lap top computer, scanner and a printer they used to print the forged notes were also seized. Negombo police are investigating.

Suspect responsible for several thefts nabbed

A suspect wanted in connection with several thefts was arrested by Mount Lavinia Police with 125 miligrammes of heroin from his possession at Badowita on Saturday. Interrogation from the suspect revealed that he had carried out burglaries and thefts with another suspects.

They had also stolen nine mobile phones in Dehiwala. The suspects had also broken into a house in Mount Lavinia and stolen valuables including five expensive mobile phones. They were produced in Mount Lavinia magistrate court yesterday.

Heavy winds injure nine, 17 houses damaged

Three people were hospitalized and 17 houses were damaged in Kubukana and Maduruketiya grama niladari divisions in Monaragala following heavy winds which prevailed on Saturday.

The power lines at Thoran Handiya on Buttala-Monaragala road has also been damaged to an extent of 100 metres. The injured have been admitted to Monaragala hospital. Monaragala Police and disaster management officers continue rescue operations.

Swallowed diamond taken out

The Rs 1.8 million diamond which a Chinese national swallowed while inspecting it in an exhibition held at BMICH on September 5 was taken out of his body at Colombo National Hospital at Ward no 23 on Saturday.

He was examined under the detention of the prisons officials by doctors where they made him to excrete the swallowed diamond.

Cinnamon Gardens Police are investigating.

Snatch thief meets his Waterloo

A suspect who snatched a gold chain from a woman while she was walking along a road in Kalubowila was arrested by mobile patrol police officers attached to the Kohuwala Police station on Friday while the suspect was escaping with the chain.

The Police also found 80 miligrammes of heroin from his possession.
