Victory establishes President as historic leader - Maithripala

Election results of the North Central, Eastern and Sabaragamuwa Provincial Councils have once again proved that President Mahinda Rajapaksa is an outstanding leader in the country’s political history, Sri Lanka Freedom Party General Secretary and Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena said.

“No leader in the world has been able to retain the popularity gained from his or her first election victory, in the elections that followed.

‘However, the confidence of the people earned by President Mahinda Rajapaksa in all elections which followed has improved, exceeding his popularity of 2005. This is convincing proof that he is an extraordinary political figure,” the minister said.

He said the wise voters have endorsed the effective public welfare measures and development agenda of the government which is being practically implemented throughout the country.

Minister Sirisena said even though Opposition parties levelled false and fabricated allegations against the government, they did not present a convincing plan to uplift the people’s lives. He said the government obtained this election victory amidst a severe drought affecting the North Central and Eastern Provinces. He said the UNP and the JVP, despite their false propaganda against the government using the drought, have been rejected by the people.

The minister expressed his gratitude to the voters who supported the election victory in the three provinces.
