Dockyard General Engineering Services local engineering arm

There is a big demand for engineering services in the mega development projects in the country and the business opportunities are growing at present. We are equipped to generate more business volumes and contribute in the country’s development drive, Dockyard General Engineering Services (Pvt) Ltd General Manager T.G. Weerasinghe told Daily News Business.

There are a number of projects which are already completed and also in the pipeline with plans to compete all of them within the time frame. We have capacity and capabilities to undertake any project making significant contribution for the country, he said.

Dockyard General Engineering Services is the local engineering arm of Dockyard which undertakes general and heavy engineering projects both in Sri Lanka and other countries including Maldives.


Projects by Dockyard General Engineering

The Heavy Engineering Department was inside the high security area of Colombo Dockyard until 2009. It has moved out at present where it initially undertook small scale projects. With the economic boom in 2009 the Heavy Engineering Department amalgamate with Dockyard Engineering to enable strategically to cater to local development projects.

Among the many projects undertaken by the Dockyard General Engineering Services are Muturajawela LPG storage facility, Shell Sri Lanka Sapugaskanda, CEB, power house, steel building.

The first and second stages of the 60 metre high steel shipping structure and pipeline related to power house is currently underway together with the LPG storage facility in Maldives and the petroleum storage facility in Thilafushi Island.

The company will embark on a tank farm for 100 MW power plant in Puttalam, steel pipe bridge across Mahaweli river Greater Kandy water supply project.

“We undertook Bogawantalawa mini hydro power project after amalgamation with other constructions. The lime structured tank for Greater Kelaniya water treatment project, Lakshapana internal and external painting of pens top, Kalawewa bridge, Malwatu Oya bridge, Ansel Lanka Construction of heater house and refurbishment of concrete tore beam at SAJT,” he said. The present projects by the Dockyard Engineering includes 64 TPD air separation plants for Ceylon Oxygen Ltd, permanent pile casing for outer circular road stage two, aviation fuel storage facility for Mattala airport, the rehabilitation of gate structure of Polgolla dam.

The company is involved in all the areas of infrastructure, irrigation, power and energy, transportation, petro chemical and civil engineering which are outside Dockyard core business of ship building and ship repairs.

The technical support and other facilities from the Colombo Dockyard gives the company added strength where it has expand its Kelani River yard to provide material storage, modern short blocking and piling facility, welding technology, modern playa facility and fabrication.

“We have modern facilities for all types of welding and a separate department for marine product sales with special emphasis on marine. We are geared to face the future demand. With the present economic boom many projects related to roads, railways including bridges and airport development projects apart from petroleum pipe lines and irrigation projects are underway.

We are ready to under take any projects in the capacity of heavy engineering both in the private sector and government, “he said.
