125th Sri Lanka Amateur Championship 2012:

Ladies semi-finals tee off today

The ladies event of the 125th Sri Lanka Amateur Championship’s has reached the semi-final stage after completing its quarter-finals at the Royal Colombo Golf course yesterday.

Top eight lady golfers battled it out in the Match Play and two Indians and two Sri Lankans were qualified for today’s semi-finals.

Jackie Dias overcame Swen Selvaratnam on the 20th hole after a well contested quarter-final match. Top seeds Gursimer Badwal (IND) and Niloo Jayatileka (SL) won their quarter-finals comfortably while Nanaki Chadha (IND) defeated her team mate Anisha Padkone to book a place in semis. Today the first semi-final will work off between Gursimer and Nanaki while Niloo will meet Jacky Dias in the second semi-final.

Meanwhile in the F. B. De Mel Cup finals for ladies’ bronze medal will tee off today between R. Sangani and Sandya Kumari.

Sangani beat Indira Tibling 8/7 and entered the final while Lalin Mui Dharmaratne conceded the victory to Sandya on a walkover to enter the final.

The men’s knock out stage began with top 32 seeded players competing in the morning session and 16 golfers were qualified for today’s pre-quarter-finals after the first round of Match Play.

Top seed, reigning champion Thangaraja beat D. M. Pradeep 8/7 to enter pre-quarters and the highlight of the day was young local National Pool player P. Hemantha of Victoria Golf Club (VGC) creating a major upset by beating leading National Pool player M. Amarapadma on the 18th hole to book his pre-quarter berth.

Local ‘A’ team golfer N. Ranga was given a ‘fright’ by Bhawani Singh from India when he managed to win on the second sudden-death hole (20th). Ranga will meet three-time title holder India’s Simarjeet Singh in today’s pre-quarter final. Sing qualified for the pre-quarters by comfortably overcoming R. Logaraja of VGC 6/4.
