One road death every four hours in Sri Lanka

One road death occurs every four hours in Sri Lanka due to motor
accidents and 100-110 road accidents occur each day in Sri Lanka,
Traffic Administration and Road Safety Director Senior Superintendent of
Police (SSP) K. Arasaratnam told the Daily News, recently.
"At present, there are over 4.5 million registered vehicles in the
country and half of them are motor cycles and they are the reason for
most of motor accidents which occur in Sri Lanka," he added.
He said that the number of deaths reported due to accidents is higher
than the deaths caused by dengue and Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD).
According to the sources, 83 persons had died due to dengue during
the past eight month. But at least five die daily due to road accidents.
The laws related to helmets and seat belts wearing should be
strengthen and it will help to minimize the damage which can be happened
by the accidents,the Director said.
He urged the public to be more careful when they are driving,
travelling and walking on the roads and to support the Police to protect
and implement the rules and regulations in a correct manner. |
