An unidentified body of a young male was found washed ashore at
Mugathuwaram, Batticaloa.
The body is lying at the Batticaloa Teaching Hospital morgue. Police
seek public help to identify the body.
Scary dance act gets woman into trouble
Priyadarshani KAHAWALA- Ingiriya Central Group Cor.
A woman who performed a dangerous dance with a cobra at a Colombo
night club was arrested by Police on Monday. According to Police the
woman had smuggled the cobra into the night club in Kollupitiya and
danced with it. It was also revealed that she was an employee of the
night club at one time.
The Arrested woman was a resident of Pilimatalawa. She will be
produced before court.
IT lab in Batti

The Police initiated an Information Technology laboratory at their
headquarters in Batticaloa covering the entire Eastern Province.
This was inaugurated by Senior D I G for Eastern Range Pujith
Jayasundra in the company of Batticaloa district DIG S Ajantha
Samarakkoon, high ranking public officers and police officials.

Dr Nalaka Godahewa was appointed Chairman of the Securities and
Exchange Commission (SEC) from yesterday.
Former Deputy Central Bank Governor Priyantha Fernando, Treasury
Deputy Secretary S R Attygalle, Senior Deputy Central Bank Governor
Ananda Silva , Sri Accountants Institute Chief Sujeewa Mudalige have
been appointed as the Board of Directors.
Relief for farmers
President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday ordered that recovery of loan
installments and interest claimed from farmers for agriculture loans
obtained from banks, and those loans taken for agriculture purposes by
pawning their gold items, must be stopped until they harness the harvest
for the Maha season of 2012 - 2013.
This relief has been given to those farmers whose livelihoods have
been affected by the prevailing drought in addition to a number of
relief programmes introduced for them by the government through District
Secretariats.
Ven. Amarawansa Nayake Thera's cremation today

Praveenacharya, Pandith Ven Kabaragala Amarawansa (88), the Chief
Incumbent of Galle Mahamodara Sri Bodhirajaramaya, Galle Wataraka
Mihindu VIhara and Weliketiye Punyawardhanaramaya passed away on August
27 after a brief illness. Ven Amarawansa Thera was also the Galu Korale
Honarary Sanghanayake of the Amarapura Sri Saddhamma Yukthika Maha
Nikaya.
Ven. Nayaka thera was also the Parivenadhipathi of the Galle
Vijayananda Pirivena continuously for 22 years until his retirement from
the Pirivena Teaching Service and the Principal of Mahamodara Sri Wimala
Dhamma School.
Ven Amarawansa Nayaka Thera's cremation will take place at 2 p.m
today at the Mahamodar Bodhirajaramaya Adhahana Maluwa (Cremation
Abode).

Jinasiri Thera is suffering from acute renal failure.
Consultant Nephrologist Dr. ALM Nazeer has recommended a kidney
transplant following regular dialysis treatment to save his life.
A spokesman for the Vihara Dayaka Sabha said a monthly expenditure of
nearly Rs. 150,000 is required for dialysis and other medical treatment,
including consultations. Financial contributions from donors and well
wishers are solicited to meet this expenditure.

Death of Chandra Kotelawala
The death occurred of Chandra Kotelawala (Nee Jayawardene) of
Katuwawala , Boralesgamuwa. She is the mother-in-law of Water Supply and
Drainage Minister Dinesh Gunawardena.
Funeral will take place at 5 pm today at the Godigamuwa cemetery in
Maharagama. Cortege leaves the residence No. 90, 'Udula' Katuwawala ,
Boralesgamuwa at 4 p.m.
Book launch
Professor J.B. Disanayaka's latest book, 'Encyclopaedia of Sinhala
Language and Culture' will be launched on September 6 at the Mihilaka
Medura at the BMICH premises at 4 p.m.
This volume, consisting of 25 essays arranged thematically and
divided into encyclopaedic entries of equal length, is described as
'three books in one': a grammar, dictionary and encyclopaedia, all
pertaining to the Sinhala language.
Deshamanya J.B. Disanayaka is Professor Emeritus of Sinhala of the
University of Colombo and is a linguist by profession, trained in both
the American and British schools of linguistics. He has written
extensively, in both Sinhala and English, on language and culture.
This event is open to the public.
Anklet tying ceremony
The anklet tying (Gejji Bendeeme Pooja Mangallya) Ceremony of Sri
Jayawardanapura University students who successfully completed their
Bharatha Natyam course will be held at the Kotahena Ponnambalameshwara
Kovil at 8.45 am today.
