JHU vows legal steps against ritual

The Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) said it will take democratic and legal
steps to stop animal sacrifices at Kaali Amman Kovil in Chilaw,
reportedly to be held on September 1.
Speaking at a press conference at the Library Services and
Documentation Board on Monday, JHU Propaganda Secretary Nishantha
Warnasinghe said they stopped the ritual of animal slaughter carried out
by Kaali Amman Kovil priest last year through a court order.
He said they are compelled to take legal action to prevent the same
sacrifice this year as well because last year's order has lapsed.
He appealed to the government to bring laws to replace rites
conducted against the norms of a civilised society, so that political
parties like theirs, animal-friendly societies, religious and public
organisations and people who are disturbed and affected by such killings
need not protest against such activities every time they are about to
take place.
