Sri Lanka to host ITU Global Symposium for Regulators
ITU's annual Global Symposium for Regulators, set to meet in Colombo,
from October 2-4, 2012, will look in-depth at the challenge of meeting
new national broadband goals, promoting affordable access and ensuring
safe and secure digital opportunities for all.
The meeting, which has earned a reputation as the pre-eminent global
gathering of the information and communication technology (ICT)
regulatory and policy-making community, is designed to foster
cross-stakeholder dialogue between regulators, policy makers, industry
leaders and other key ICT stakeholders.
Participants will engage in stimulating discussions on a wide range
of compelling issues, including net neutrality, specturn policy,
international roaming, cloud computing, data protection and privacy,
international and regional IP interconnection, and public-private
partnerships to foster network investment.
The event is being organized by ITU in collaboration with the
Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL), under the
high Patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who will preside over the
opening of Monday October 2 . It will be chaired by TRCSL Chairman
Lalith Weeratunga.
This year's programme beings with an interactive High-Level Segment
focusing on transnational regulatory issues in a converged digital era.
The first two days of the symposium comprise the Global
Regulators-Industry Dialgoue (GRID, October 2-3 ), and are open to
regulators, policy makers and members of ITU's Development Sector. The
third day (October 4 ) is a closed session open to regulators and policy
makers only.
The morning session on October 2 is open to media, culminating in a
press conference scheduled to take place at 12:45.
Journalists are encouraged to accredit online now to attend this
prestigious event. Formal accreditation prior to the event is essential
to gain access to the event venue. Please note that accreditation will
close on September 21 and that there will be no accreditation on-site.
