A former civilian labourer attached to the Ambalangoda Police station
engaged in trafficking heroin, hiding packets of the drug in his
possession was arrested by Ambulangoda Police last week.
Police said on interrogation, he has revealed that he had earlier
served a joint term in connection with an alleged murder. In prison,
where he was known among inmates as ‘Bossa’ alias ‘Rathu’, he had met a
drug kin-pin named ‘Chuti’ and befriended him.
After the two were discharged from prison, ‘Chuti’ from Mt Lavinia
induced him to engage in drug trafficking by supplying the drug in bulk.
Police said while in police detention, the suspect refused to take food
given to him and he was referred for a medical examination to the
Balapitiya Base Hospital. Doctors who examined him had detected drugs
from his stomach and on questioning the suspect confessed to having
hidden several packets of drugs in his possession.
The suspect passed out 400 grams of heroin in packeted form. The
suspect was later produced before Balapitiya Magistrate Asanka
Bodaragama and remanded till August 27. Investigations are continuing by
a team led by Inspector Niroshan Rupasinghe and directed by Elpitiya SP
Vidya Pathirana.
