Fire destroys 10 line rooms

A fire swept through a row of line rooms in Samimale, Norwood destroying 10 dwellings .Forty one people belonging to 14 families were displaced as a result.No injuries were reported.

Norwood Police are investigating.


Seminar on graphics and multimedia

The Sri Lanka Institute of Printing under the Youth Affairs and Skills Development Ministry will hold a workshop style seminar on Graphic Design and Multimedia Education on September 2 at 8.30 am at the Institute premises. This seminar intends to give an exposure and understanding of the use of essential graphic software packages used in the industry.

COSLAM lecture

The Conference of Sri Lankan Malays (COSLAM) and the Trustees of Wekanda Jumma Masjid will hold its monthly Islamic lecture series, 'In the shade of the Holy Quran' on August 26 at the Wekanda Jumma Masjid from 10.30 a.m. to Luhar prayers. The topic will be "The aftermath of Ramadhan."


Buddhist talk

Dhamma Weerakone will deliver a public talk in English on "Nibbana" at the meeting of the Servants of the Buddha Society on Saturday August 25 15 at 4.30 p.m at Maithree Hall, Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya.


Sales fair

Colombo branch of the Past Pupils' Association of the St. Joseph's Convent Kegalle will organize a sales fair under the theme "Big Bargain Sale" at St. Paul's Milagiriya Church Hall, Colombo 4 on Saturday August 25 . Cloths food items, beauty products, baby items, household items and many more will be available. It will be held from 10 a.m to 4 p.m. The proceeds of the fair will be channelled to the school's scholarship fund and for the Girls' Home.


Tharu Samaga Mama

Tharu Samaga Mama, a photographic exhibition with a difference by Suraj Serasingha will be held at the Namel Malini Punchi Theater, Borella, on August 24 and 25 from 9 a.m to 6.00 p.m.


Elephant carcass found

A carcass of an elephant was found by Wildlife Conservation officials at Dabulukelle in the Elahera-Giritale sanctuary.

According to the officials, the animal had died about three days before. The elephant had gun shot injuries. It was over 25 years. Meanwhile, the officials have requested the veterinary surgeon of the Mahaweli region to hold a post-mortem examination.


House burgled

The thieves who entered a house at mid night, through the back window, at Vihara Junction in Dambulla robbed Rs 20,000 and a mobile phone.


Six drivers in hot seat

Six persons were caught by Mahawela Police while driving vehicles under the influence of liquor.

They were fined Rs 7,500 each on being produced before Paldeniya Circuit Court Magistrate Rangani Gamage. Their licences were suspended for six months.


Fake gem seller nabbed

A man, a resident of Kubugoda Aara in Embilipitiya was taken into custody in connection with the selling of fake gems to a gem merchant in Ratnapura.

The gems had been sold on the pretext of gems mined from treasure, Embilipitiya Headquarters Police said. The gems had been sold at Rs 1,000,000. The suspect had been engaged in fake gem sale in several parts of the country.

Some persons who supported the man in the illicit trade are absconding, Police said. The suspect was remanded on being produced before Embilipitiya Magistrate Rashantha Jinadasa.


Nursery ground for mosquitoes

The Kandy Mahaiyawa waste water canal passing by the Vidyartha College, primary by the Mahaiyawa tunnel is a nursery ground for mosquito breeding. Water is stingy. Polythene and other materials are seen strewn.


Rs 550,000 from Consumer Authority raids

Rs 550,000 has been derived by way of fines from 450 raids conducted by the Hambantota Consumer Authority in the district during the past seven months.

The raids were conducted at Tangalle, Walasmulla, Hambantota and Angunakolapelessa, said Hambantota consumer authority OIC W A Lakmal.


Training centre on ambulance services

St Johns ambulance services has set up a training centre at Siribopura, Hambantota. It was set up to train volunteers in ambulance service in emergency situations, educate the public and school children on types of disasters and other training.


Soldier nabbed with illicit Liquor

An army soldier who was transporting five bottles of illegal liquor on a motorcycle was arrested by police.

He was fined Rs 24,000 on being produced before Nikaweratiya Magistrate K K Liayanage. The accused was a resident of Digannewa area.
